Their Is A Difference Between Ironing Fabric And Pressing Fabric! Really?

Who would have thought that apart from your sewing machine, that your steam iron will be the most important piece of sewing equipment in your sewing arsenal.

To have good crisp edges, corners, and seam lines, you need to start by pressing your fabric  pieces before you cut, you then need to press every sew line between sewing.  It will set your stitches. The thread will then, instead of looking like it is sitting on top, blend in smoothly with the fabric.  It will also flattens and smooths out any puckering, and will gives your sewing a professional look.

The Difference Between Pressing and Ironing!

Moving your iron forward and backward, in a sliding motion on the fabric, is called ironing. That gets the wrinkles out of our clothes so we look presentable. Try getting that through a teenagers head :)

When sewing, then you are suppose to be pressing.

The best way to do this is with an Ironing Press

When pressing, the iron is placed down on the fabric,  and then lifted strait back up again in a quick, overlapping up, down, up then down again motion.

Ironing, stretch and can alter the grain (lay) of the fabric, and that is not something you want if you want strait seam lines or hemlines.

Pressing doesn't mean that you have to press down hard. Pressing is accomplished by setting the right heat and steam, setting on you iron, and letting the irons own weight do the pressing for you.

Use an Ironing Press to do your pressing

Otherwise you are going to be left with scorching, shrinking and shiny ironing marks on the fabric.

To play it safe always use a pressing cloth. It is simply a cloth that is place between the fabric and the iron. It protects especially those delicate fabrics.
